It is believed that the history of the wedding bouquet could be traced back to Roman times, when a bride and groom would wear fragrant flowers, grains and herbs, such as garlic, as a way to ward off evil spirits that were thought to bring bad luck. Over the years the use of flowers took precedence over grains and herbs, as flowers were considered a sign of fertility, happiness and everlasting love.
It was felt amongst the wedding guests, that the bride was considered a lucky person and they hoped that some of her luck would rub off onto them. It has been said that dating back to the 14th Century, in Western Europe, that it was lucky to tear off some of the bride's clothing as a keepsake and hence to acquire some of her good fortune. It is believed that this idea of trying to chase a bride and to tear off an item of her clothing, was the catalyst to tossing the wedding bouquet as a means to occupy her guests and hence the bride could make her escape. The tradition behind tossing the bouquet states, that the unmarried female who catches the bouquet, will be the next to marry.
Although the tossing of the bouquet seems a traditional aspect to a wedding ceremony, over the years the event has taken on a slightly different twist. It is possible, when discussing the type of bouquet that you want with your florist, to also request a slightly smaller version to be made. By using an alternative bouquet, you can still keep the original as a memento of the wonderful occasion and yet, still please your guests by tossing a bouquet to them, to pass on your good luck. During some wedding ceremonies, it has been known for the bride to have a special guest to give the bouquet to. Often the bride would choose someone who had married recently, or even to the couple that have been married the longest, which enabled the bride to honour someone who has a special place in their heart.
