Outdoor Lighting Tips From Experienced Landscape Gardeners

It is during these dark nights many gardeners often wish they had installed more lighting to either light up their front door for visitors or to driveways and not forgetting their Landscaped gardens.
Those of you who already have existing lighting at this time of the year, may start to be planning to extend your current network come this spring.
So that you can give added illumination to the barbecue area.
Maybe you are just thinking about adding more lights in a different area, whatever choice you decide the type of powered lights to install are limited.
But again another reason to consult you Landscape gardener.
For your household security lights you could just add these to your current lighting system.
The lowest cost option that does not involve digging any trenches is solar power.
However you cannot just turn on solar lights any time of the day, solar lights need at least 8 hours of daylight so they are full charged for use in the evening.
Plus these lights have to be placed where they are not in the shade as they will not get fully charged.
Laying down solar lights will avoid the need to lay any cable as solar lights are generally stand alone.
However the brightness of these lights still does not come up to standard electric lights and although the technology is improving we are still some years away from electric type lighting.
Most Landscape gardeners will recommend electrical lighting as Solar lighting is still not very efficient.
Most of today's outside electric lights run off a twelve volt transformer.
For this you will need some form of outside electrical socket or you could wire them in into a separate fuse if you have the space in your fuse box, which could be useful at some point.
Obviously electric lighting will cost more than solar lighting, but can be turned on and off at will and are far brighter in terms of illumination.
Adding lights to an existing Landscaped garden is not that difficult, if you are using solar lights this is probably the easiest solution provided you can give the solar panels enough daylight.
If you need to lay any electrical wiring you may need to consult a Landscape Gardener or local council as to the rules you need to follow as many councils around the country have different regulations for this sort of thing - Some provide little guidance.
When deciding to have trench dug consult your local authority or local Landscape Gardener, as a guide so long as you are around nine inches below the surface you should be OK but beware of any pipes or cables, but as a precaution just check with your local authority.
So we do advice planning in your lights with your original planning as any extra digging will be almost negligible.
