- 1). Check to see that the cord of the pond pump can reach a power source. Outlets need to be at least six feet from bodies of water, so the pump will need to have a cord of at least six feet.
- 2). Determine where you plan to keep the waterfall pump for your pond. If you plan to keep it underwater, you will need a submersible pump. An out-of-pond model should be used if you don't plan to submerge it. Keep in mind that a submersible pump is quieter than external pumps.
- 3). Look for waterfall pond pumps that have enough power to turn the water and operate your waterfall. Without a waterfall, the pump needs to be able to turn as many gallons per hour of water as you have in your pond, including water in the pond's hose. Add 150 gallons per inch of the width of your waterfall to determine the power you need to operate your pond's waterfall.
