The Individuals with Disabilities Act

This act has been passed in order to ensure that all children can avail free and necessary appropriate public education so that their needs are met with. This act provides for special education service for kids with special needs as long as the needs meet specific requirements. Autism does meet these requirements.

This is the education that helps meet the needs of your child. This helps the child to progress while learning.

Learning environment that is least restrictive

This calls for children to be placed in educational settings that are suitable for their skills and needs while allowing them to interact with other children who do not suffer from the same disability. It is the duty of the school to ensure that all the needs of the autistic child is met within the regular classroom itself and it is responsible for the child's progress.

The school first conducts an evaluation of your child in order to determine what special needs have to be catered to. Either the school or the parent can initiate this evaluation. In case you feel there is some problem, you can write a letter to the school requesting them to evaluate your kid. They will send you a document that you are required to sign in order to allow the evaluation to take place. The evaluation tests the child for different problems such as learning disabilities and mental or behavioral problem. Once they have evaluated your child, they will hold a meeting in which you get to discuss the different problems and their findings.

IEP

When a child needs special education services, an IEP is usually used. The group that is responsible for the child's evaluation forms a part of the IEP team. Even the parents can decide what goes into the IEP. The IEP helps the child state his or her needs in order to gain an appropriate education. There will also be a list of the different services the child will receive when in the IEP. Evaluation of the IEP can happen anytime in case the service is not satisfactory for the child. A few services that come with the IEP are some extra time while submitting class mate, read the tests aloud, or a personal aide are present. Each child gets a different IEP. The parents can request when they want the IEP meet, but usually it is met at least once a year. Parents can choose to be present at all the meets.
