Surface Roots
- As the maple tree grows, its shallow roots break the ground's surface. Poor soil and erosion also contribute to surface root development. Care should be taken to prevent damage to the roots. Maple trees are prone to bleeding sap when their outer covering is punctured. These wounds attract insect infestations, fungal diseases and bacterial infections. Avoid mowing over roots. Lay mulch loosely at the base of the plant. Cutting back maple tree roots, under any portion of the tree's canopy, risks killing the tree. Only when the roots are heaving sidewalks or other man-made ground coverings should the roots be cut back and removed.
