- 1). Empty a 24-oz. pickle jar and clean it using warm, soapy water. Make sure that the jar you choose has a tight-fitting lid. Dry the jar with a soft towel after rinsing.
- 2). Fill the jar with approximately 3 inches of water. Add a few drops of food coloring to the water. The more food coloring you add to the water the deeper the color of the water.
- 3). Add 1/3 cup of vegetable oil to the colored water. The oil should form a thin layer on top of the water.
- 4). Shake salt into the jar, giving the shaker two or three shakes. As you sprinkle, notice the salt combining with the oil, forming balls that float through the colored water.
- 5). Seal the jar tightly with the lid when all of the oil and salt sinks to the bottom of the jar. Turn the jar over and the salt and oil will return to the top.
