- 1). Look under the driver's side dash for the test port, also called the Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL). It has either 12 or 16 electrical ports, and may have a plastic cover. Remove the cover if there is one.
- 2). Connect the plug end of the diagnostic scanner to the ALDL. Turn the Ford's ignition key to the "On" position, but don't crank it.
- 3). Turn the scanner on. Answer the series of prompts on the scanner screen to identify your vehicle's make and model. Initiate the diagnostic sequence.
- 4). Write down the codes as they appear on the screen. Each code points to a specific problem area detected by the Ford's computer system. For instance, Code P1051 means the brake signal light is out or faulty.
