Famous American women inventors of African origin

Science is a field which is usually dominated by men all over the world and room is yet to be created for women in this field. The sight of a woman in a scientific lab was extremely rare at one point in time. It was even rarer to see a patent for a scientific invention being taken in the name of a woman. A patent is the proof that a particular invention has been created by a specific scientist. Women were not given equivalent rights during previous generations and centuries and all the patents for any of their inventions were taken either in the name of their father or husband. A lot of women were denied the basic right to higher education which would qualify them to create many more inventions which would be useful to mankind on a daily basis.

Times have changed and many more women have managed to make their mark in the world of science and they have also registered many different patents in their names. A lot of American women inventors are of African origin. But it has been difficult to estimate the exact number of American women inventors of African origin who have managed to register patents for their inventions. Sarah S Goode was one of the first American women inventors of African origin who managed to secure a patent in her own name in the year 1885 for the creation of a folding cabinet bed. This was an invention which would help in saving a large amount of space in any home. The bed could be folded to form a cabinet during the day time and then kept against the wall of the living room. This cabinet will contain a writing table with all the required shelves for storing all kinds of stationery as well as other requisites for writing. This kind of folding bed had been created especially for people who live in small houses and apartments.

Miriam Benjamin was the second American woman inventor of African origin to receive a patent in her own name. She was a school teacher in Washington DC and she secured a patent in 1888 for the creation of a gong and signal chair for hotels. This invention allowed customers seated at a restaurant to call for a waiter by pressing a bell which was placed near their seats. When the bell was pressed, a button which was present on the chair would relay a message to the desk of the waiter and the light on the chair would start glowing which will inform the waiter regarding which specific customer requires assistance. This was an invention which was also used in the United States House of Representatives.

Sarah Boone was another woman inventor from America who secured a patent on an improvised version of an ironing board. This improved version of an ironing board would help in removing all the creases and wrinkles from the body as well as the sleeves of the dresses which were worn by ladies during that time. This was a curved and narrow board where the dress could be flipped on both sides and ironed.
