Wedding receptions in the United Kingdom are steeped in tradition, and some of those customs differ from what one would expect at an American wedding. Traditions with the bridal party, the meal and celebratory toasts mark a reception as strictly English or British, and can add a touch of class and heritage to your wedding.

Top Table

Traditional English wedding receptions usually include a top table that sits in front of all the other dining tables at the party. As opposed to traditional American receptions where the wedding party is seated with their spouses or dates, the English top table seats only the bride and groom and their bridal party. The groomsmen sit next to the groom, and the bridesmaids sit next to the bride.

It is traditional for telegrams to be read during wedding receptions in the U.K. The telegrams are sent by invited guests who are unable to attend the wedding; they offer congratulations to the happy couple. It is traditional for the groom's best man to read these telegrams aloud to the entire reception party during dinner or after the speeches have been given.

The wedding reception in the U.K. is commonly known as a wedding breakfast, even if the meal takes place in the afternoon. While weddings are held at morning, noon or night in the U.S., a U.K. wedding typically takes place mid-day, with a luncheon reception afterward. Regardless, the meal is still referred to as "breakfast," as lighter fare is served than is typical of American reception meals.
