Home Security - What Not to Do

Despite the assurance of the FBI that crime is going down in the United States, you still need to do everything you can to make sure that your loved ones, yourself, and your property remains protected.
Unfortunately, many people don't put enough thought into home security, thinking that nothing bad could possibly happen to them, and that bad things happen to "other people.
" This is the first mistake that millions of people make every day.
The world is a dangerous place, an unforgiving place, and most thieves don't care whom they steal from or who they hurt.
Be proactive in your home's protection.
Laziness on the part of the homeowner is another problem that can lead to mistakes and chinks in your home's armor.
Check all of your locks.
Check the windows, the doors, the attic, the basement, the garage, and any other locks you have in and around your home.
A broken lock or a broken window is an invitation to a thief, and you should get these repaired as soon as possible - don't let a single day go by.
Speaking of doors and windows, don't make the mistake of leaving them unlocked or open.
This goes for when you are home as well as when you are away.
Again, if a thief is targeting your home, they will see this as a weakness, a mistake that you made, and they will take advantage.
While you might like the view out the picture window, you might not want to open the drapes if you have expensive electronics or other items that would tempt a would be thief.
It is best to keep those things out of easy sight.
Another mistake that people make more often than you might think is giving out copies of their keys.
While you may trust someone implicitly, and he or she may be worthy of that trust, there is no way for you to be sure that they don't lose the key or have it stolen by someone who is less than trustworthy.
This goes for your access codes to keyless entry locks as well.
If you think the code might have fallen into the hands of someone who is not an immediate member of the family that lives in the home, then you should change the code.
Should you somehow lose the keys to your house, change them out ASAP.
Landscaping is another place where people can make mistakes.
Most want lush gardens, bushes and trees to add to the beauty of the home, but they don't realize just how this could compromise their security.
Certain types of landscaping can provide cover and hiding spots for criminals who would do you harm.
By all means, keep the exterior of your home beautiful, but trim the shrubs and take away anyplace that someone might use to hide.
Add some extra lighting to help dispel all of those shadows as well.
You may also want to invest in a good home security system, which can be worth its weight in gold.
