Fort Adams, built to defend the bay and harbor at Newport RI, had a long military history that lasted from 1799-1945. After being deeded to the state in 1965, it became a state park and now provides a bounty of outdoor recreation for visitors.
Within the park, one can find the Fort Adams Sailing Association, which offers sailing instructions and services, and the Museum of Yachting, with it's displays of Newport yachting memorabilia.
There's also soccer and rugby fields, as well as beaches, boat ramps, fishing piers and picnic areas.
Although long since retired from military duty, Fort Adams is under siege every summer during the festival season as it plays host to a great variety of musical events, two favorites being the Newport Folk Festival and the JVC Jazz Festival. With the beautiful outdoor setting and the great talent lineups, the festivals have become very popular attractions.
Whether you're a festival goer, a history buff, you like sailing, or just strolling on the beach, consider a Rhode Island beach destination in your travel plans.
