Guide Review - Hummingbird Oasis Feeder from Perky-Pet

The Hummingbird Oasis feeder is a classic saucer design ringed with continuous perches that allow birds to access the six generously spaced feeding ports. The red cover provides plenty of color to attract the birds, though the yellow flower accents around the feeding ports may also attract bees or wasps. The floral accents can easily be removed, however, without deterring the birds' interest. The bottom half of the feeder is clear to allow easy monitoring of nectar levels, and the two halves snap together for easy assembly and disassembly for cleaning and refilling.

That ease does come at a price, however, and if not assembled or hung properly the feeder can leak excessively where the two halves join.

The feeding ports are equally spaced around the feeder's circumference, and the wide perches give birds the option of perching as well as hovering to feed. Because of the low profile of the feeder, even perched birds are visible when feeding. The small built-in ant moat helps deter insects but may evaporate quickly on the hottest summer days.

The feeder comes equipped with a sturdy brass hanging rod that screws securely into the base, and the underside of the base is also designed to be easily mounted on a standard pole. If unbalanced when either hung or mounted, however, the nectar levels will be uneven and may be inaccessible to birds on part of the feeder if levels fall too low. This can be corrected by rebalancing the feeder carefully or adding weight to one side to even it out.

Unlike many hummingbird feeders with tight bases and steep angles, the Oasis feeder is wide open when disassembled, making it simple to keep thoroughly clean. A small brush is still recommended for cleaning feeding ports, however.

Simple and efficient, the Hummingbird Oasis feeder is a classic, appealing design that makes it easy to feed hummingbirds. With the flexibility of hanging or pole-mounting, this feeder will be a welcome addition to any backyard hummingbird buffet.
