- 1). Lay a piece of string or rope on the ground to designate the perimeter of where you are installing the black lava nuggets. Adjust it until you are happy with the location and appearance of the boundary.
- 2). Dig a trench 5 inches wide and 4 inches deep along the entire length of the string, using the spade. Shovel the dirt to the inside of the area for easier cleanup.
- 3). Insert a carpenter's level along the bottom of the trench to ensure it's level. If the air bubble is not centered, dig out additional soil until it is.
- 4). Insert stone pavers into the trench side by side to create a border around the lava rocks and keep it contained. Place the edges of the pavers as close as possible and leave the top 3 inches above ground. Fill in the trench with soil and pack it down tightly.
- 5). Place the black lava rock into a wheelbarrow and transport it to the center of the area. Dump it in a pile and spread it out into a 2-inch layer, using the bow rake.
- 6). Install additional black lava rock until the entire landscaping area is filled.
- 7). Pull the mulch back at least 4 inches from the base of each plant, shrub and tree to prevent choking.
