Camping is a fun activity that can be very peaceful and enjoyable. However, an evening around the campfire can turn ugly if the weather changes unexpectedly and you are not prepared. They are a few basics on choosing clothes for camping. If you follow a clothing checklist for camping, you prepare yourself for every type of circumstance, from warm weather to sudden rainstorms. The key to choosing camping clothing is to buy a variety of items for each layer that can be mixed and matched for all types of weather. - The best type of inner layer clothing is pieces made of fabrics that don't hold moisture. The inner layer of clothing is the layer that is next to the skin. It needs to insulate, but if it holds moisture when you sweat, it will make you uncomfortable throughout the day. If camping in cold temperatures, it is especially important to keep the inner layer dry because after you sweat, it will remain damp and make you even colder. Good inner layer clothing consists of tight-fitting shirts and pants made of silk, polypropylene, Moisture Transport System (MTS 2) and Capilene.
- Mid-layer clothes are everyday clothes, such as sweatshirts, long-sleeve shirts, jeans or sweatpants. These clothes will aid in warmth when it is cold outside, or you can wear them alone if the temperatures are comfortable and you are lounging around the campsite. Good fabrics for mid-layer clothing are wool, cotton or nylon blends, Moisture Transport System, or Capilene. Be sure to choose mid-layer pieces that are lightweight and durable, so you know they will last over many camping trips.
- Insulated clothing will aid in warmth if you experience to cold temperatures. Insulation layers are items such as sweaters, jackets, windbreakers, vests and fleece pants. The key to the insulation layer is finding clothing that is warm but doesn't weigh you down or make it difficult to move. Ideal fabrics for the insulation layers are wool, fleece, pile and nylon.
- The outer layer of camping clothing will only be necessary on top of everything else if you are camping in extremely cold temperatures. Again, you can wear this layer just over the inner layer or mid layer, but it doesn't hurt to have them on hand if necessary. Outer layer clothes are insulated coats and pants that protect against snow, rain and wind.
