- Purchase a battery that will give you enough power to run your motor for the amount of time that you plan on spending in the water. Your boat size also needs to be considered when purchasing your battery. The bigger your boat, the bigger the battery that you will need to purchase. Smaller boats, under 16 feet, can run well on a 12-volt battery. Boats larger than 16 feet will need at least a 24-volt battery.
- Batteries and chargers can be costly, range dramatically in price, and vary in their quality. Batteries range from about $120 to $320 and chargers range from about $38 to $330, as of November 2010.
- Trolling motors vary in the battery voltage that they require to run them. Always check your manual to make sure that you purchase a battery with the recommended voltage amount.
