What is an EMT?

Emergency Medical Technician is the precise meaning of the acronym EMT and the term can be used in a good many countries. An EMT is likewise often known as an ambulance technician or first responder and identifies a skilled professional who presents emergency medical services. Their purpose is to give swift medical assistance to their patients at any site where the patient is, before reaching a medical facility.

While the terms of reference for EMTs can vary from one jurisdiction to another, the standard tasks of an EMT include:

Responding to emergency calls, administering (sometimes) life saving medical techniques, including
(although not confined to) cardiopulmonary resuscitation, controlling external bleeding, retaining a patients' airway and satisfactory breathing, protecting against| shock, immobilization and injury to the spinal cord, and defibrillation etc. Delivering the person to a nearby medical healthcare centre is an important element of EMT services. This can be accomplished in numerous varieties of transportation which includes an ambulance, life-flight helicopter or military vehicle.

The profession and term EMT is reasonably modern in the history of medical care. When one looks at ancient medical care has existed for centuries, the job of an EMT just has been in place since the 1970s. Previously it had been hospital workers or physicians who adopted on the role of an EMT. Now EMTs and EMT paramedics perform a crucial role, that of the €on the scene€ emergency medical care. This service often means a life is saved, one which otherwise would might not have been the case if the patient needed to wait to get to a hospital or health care facility.

Emergency medical technicians usually serve as part of rescue teams organized by hospitals, police, fire departments, and military. Their standing can be both paid labor and voluntary services. The initial step when it comes to obtaining EMT training is searching for a college or vocational paramedic training institute which offers EMT paramedic training courses. The courses are brief, usually only a few months, unless the EMT is pursing a paramedic school certification. That paramedic training may take about two years.

Some of the qualifications criteria of EMT training are as follows;

You must be at least 18 years old
You must have a high school diploma
You must have no physical disability
You must have no criminal record
You must pass basic education courses

Depending on the level of qualifications you are wanting to obtain, you may select one of the following certifications offered by many colleges and vocational training institutes; CPR, First Responder, EMT-B (Basic), EMT-I/85 (lower level intermediate), EMT-I/99 (higher level intermediate), and EMT-P (Paramedic).

When you have successfully completed one or more of the above mentioned EMT training ranges or paramedic school, you'll be instructed to complete the Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exam. Passing the NREMT allows you to be a nationally certified professional paramedic and obtain licensing anywhere in the United States. This paramedic certification can also be recognized in areas outside the US and Canada.

Whatever the amount of EMT paramedic school certification, the vocation of an EMT is an important one in the medical care sector.
