- 1). Cut the cords six times longer than the length of the finished braid. Cut half as many cords as the braid cord width. If you are braiding eight cords, you will need four cords.
- 2). Fold the cords in half at the center. Slip the cords over the foundation piece, such as a belt buckle, dowel rod or ring. Bring the folded loop up and over from the back. Place two ends through your loop and pull tight. Attach each cord in the same manner.
- 3). Tie the foundation piece with any extra cord for support as you braid. Lay all the cords out flat and straight.
- 4). Cross the right center cord over the left center cord. Cross the next cord to the right of the center under and over the cords to the center. Cross the next cord to the left of the center under and over to the center. Always work towards the center cords, forming a V-shaped point to your work.
- 5). Work the next cord to the right in the same over-and-under pattern and then move onto the next cord to the left, using the same braiding pattern. Then braid the next right and then the next left. Keep working in this pattern until you have reached the outermost right and left cords of the braid.
- 6). Continue to braid the right and left outermost cords to the center of your work until you have reached the desired length. As your braid the outermost cords into place, a new set of outer cords will appear.
- 7). Stitch the ends of the braid down with a needle and thread or a sewing machine, in either a V-shape or straight across. Cut the remaining cords off to the length of your choice.
