- Whirlpool refrigerators must be plugged into a grounded three-prong outlet to operate. Plug a lamp into the same outlet to make sure the power supply is working. Check the fuse/circuit breaker for blowouts. If the unit has recently been unplugged, make sure the controls are set to the desired temperature, and allow 24 hours for complete cooling.
- Unplug the refrigerator, and remove the service panel. Inspect all wiring, and replace any that appears broken, burnt or frayed. Use only appliance-grade wire. If the electrical relay panel appears burnt or has loose solders, contact a repair center. Replacing the relay board requires special tools and training.
- Locate the compressor on the back of the refrigerator. If it does not run when the unit is plugged in, replace it. Unplug the fridge, and remove the front kickplate. Locate the defrost timer to the right of the drip pan, and test for continuity with a multimeter. If the reading is above 0.5, replace it. If the unit still doesn't run at all, contact a repair center.
