- 1). Locate the panel that covers the plug of the lint trap. Consult your washing machine's instruction manual to find its exact location.
- 2). Remove any screws you find in the panel with a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver. Pull off the cover. If you don't see any screws, look for a slot around the perimeter of the panel. Insert the flat-head screwdriver into the slot and pry upward until the cover releases to expose the plug.
- 3). Set a mop bucket or bath towel on the floor beneath the drain plug. Washers always have a certain amount of water left in them after a wash. If you're removing the plug because the washer won't drain, be ready for a considerable amount of water gushing out.
- 4). Twist the drain plug counter-clockwise to remove the lint trap. Pull it out and let the water flow. Open the trap and wash it out in a sink. Be on the lookout for coins and jewelry that may be in the trap. Replace the drain trap plug and removable panel in the reverse order that you took them apart.
