- 1). Keep your counters and cabinets clean and free of crumbs and loose food items. Mice are drawn in to homes for a number of reasons. An accessible food supply is one of the most common.
- 2). Locate openings in the interior and exterior walls of your home and seal them with a mixture of steel wool and caulk. Mice can fit through an area as small as a pencil, so this will be a labor-intensive effort.
- 3). Place mothballs in mouse holes and other areas that are prone to infestations. This may help keep mice away. Fox urine has also been reported to help with mouse problems. Mothballs are toxic so be careful where you put them.
- 4). Get a cat. Cats are known for their love of hunting mice, but in many cases simply having a cat around can get mice out of your home. Even if your cat never catches a mouse, mice may move on once they smell a cat.
- 5). Consider using non-fatal mousetraps. These are more expensive than glue or snap traps but allow you to catch mice and relocate them without injury.
