Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) - Fertility Treatmen

Get the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about in vitro fertilization to help you decide whether IVF is the right fertility treatment for you.

How do I qualify to get IVF?
The qualifications to receive In Vitro fertilization will likely vary from clinic to clinic, and generally you will need a referral from your doctor to give to the fertilization clinic. Many times, you will have to be under the age of 45, in general good health, and pass a selection of health tests to ensure that you are a good candidate.

Will I be given fertility medication before my IVF treatment?
Generally, hormones will be given to the woman in order to stimulate her ovaries so that they will produce a number of eggs before they are removed. The type of drugs used will vary, and you should ask your doctor what type of medication they think will work best for you.

How many eggs are taken in an IVF treatment?
This will also vary from clinic to clinic, though the average is about 16. Only a handful of these eggs will be used in the initial treatment, between 2 and 4, and the rest will be frozen to use in future treatments if necessary.

How long does an IVF treatment take?
The entire process takes a few weeks. You will first need to have your medical tests done, then you will begin hormone treatment. Once the egg and sperm samples are taken and mixed, it will be 3 or more days before they are implanted into the uterus. It will then take 14 days for you to know if the implantation was successful.

Why do I have to wait 14 days after implantation to take a pregnancy test?
The hormones given to you prior to the IVF implantation can result in your pregnancy tests results showing a false positive. Waiting 14 days gives the medication time to leave your system. At that time, your doctor will perform a blood pregnancy test, which will give you accurate results.

How much does in vitro fertilization cost?
Each cycle of treatment generally runs at least $12,000 or more, depending on your specific case, and the location where you live. That cost however, will only cover one cycle, and if the treatment does not take the first time, additional cycles may be required.
