Troubleshooting a Pool Pump

    Water Flow

    • The size of the pool pump will be determined by the size of the pool and the amount of water it holds. The entire water volume should pass through the pump every 24 hours. Some manufacturers suggest that the entire water volume should be pumped every eight hours to ensure cleanliness.

If you notice that there is a decrease in the amount of water that is being pulled through the pump, it is possible that there is a blockage in the system. Shut the pump off before investigating. Not only is this a safety issue, it stops the pump from overheating or burning out because of any blockages. Check the area around the water inlet to make sure nothing is stopping water from entering the pump. Inside the pump is a strainer basket. Check the owner's manual to find out how to gain access to the strainer basket. If the basket is filled with debris, empty it and put the basket back. Turn the system on and check to see if the water flow is back to normal.

    No Pumping

    • If you hear that the pump is running, but isn't actually pumping any water, there are several different possible causes. There may not be enough water in the pool. If the water level is too low, water can't reach the pump inlet to be pulled through the system. Add water to the pool and see if the pump starts doing its job.

You could also have an issue with a clogged filter. Turn the pump off. Locate the filter and check to see if it needs to be cleaned or replaced. The filter should be replaced if there is any visible damage. If the filter and the water levels check out, there could be a problem inside the pump. For example, there could be damage to the impellers or air leaks in the intake lines. These are best checked out by a professional.

    Noisy Pump

    • Sometimes the problem with the pump may just be noise. But a noisy pump is more than just a nuisance. It can be an indication of worse problems down the line. Most pumps are noisy because they are not the right size for the pools. More specifically, some homeowners install pumps that are too large. There is a misconception that a larger pump will circulate water faster. But in reality, the size of the pipe that returns water to the pool will be the driving force for the amount of water that circulates. If the pump is bringing in large volumes of water that the outlet pipes can't handle, this will cause loud mechanical noises. If you believe this is occurring, find out if you have the right pump size. Installing a pump that is the wrong size will burn the pump out faster.
