How Much Shock to Put in an Inground Pool

    Amount

    • The amount of shock you need in your pool depends on the number of gallons and the type of shock you are using. If you are using powdered shock that comes in one-pound packages, one pound will shock 10,000 gallons. Read the directions on the chemicals and know the number of gallons in your pool and do the math.

    How to Shock

    • Add water to a bucket. A five-gallon bucket is good if you have one. If not, fill a smaller bucket as full as you can. Add the shock to the water in the bucket and dissolve it. Don't ever put chemicals in the bucket first and then add water.

How to Add Shock to the Pool

    • With an inground pool, you need to understand how your filter system works. You may be able to add the dissolved shock into the system the same way you add chlorine. Otherwise, you may need to pour it right into the pool, in front of where the water returns back into the pool from the filter. This will help it disperse throughout the pool.
