- 1). Till the soil to a depth of six inches with a tilling machine or shovel, breaking up clods and clumps, removing stones and vegetation as you go. Rake smooth.
- 2). Measure the length and width of the area to be planted with a measuring tape and multiply to get square footage. Divide this number by three for square yardage, allowing you to calculate the amount of sod you need.
- 3). Water the tilled, raked area thoroughly the night before planting.
- 4). Roll out layers of zoysia sod to fit the planting area. Use a box cutter to cut sod to fit. Lay each length of sod, fitting it firmly to the next. Walk on it, or use a sod roller to ensure firm contact of roots with soil. If there are too many air spaces between roots and soil, the roots will dry out without establishing. Water deeply after planting to give the sod a good start.
