- ASHI was formed in 1976 by a group of home inspectors. Their goals were to educate consumers and to bring professionalism to their field. Today ASHI has more than 6,000 members and 80 chapters in North America.
- The American Society of Home Inspectors has worked hard to create uniform standards to be used in home inspections. In fact, its Standards of Practice are used as the standard for many pieces of legislation as well as the gold standard sought after by consumers. Through its website it offers information and advice to inspectors, consumers, real estate agents and the media.
- Inspectors wishing to join ASHI must first complete an application; the application can be completed online at the website or may be printed out. The next step is to send or fax a copy of your photo identification. As of September 2010, a $100 application fee is required, and may be paid by credit card or check.
