A good many devout religious folks do not believe in evolution, even though evolution is everywhere all around us in nearly everything that is.
Interestingly enough such folks believe that god created man as a super being - custom made so to speaketh.
And since this is a "fact" as they claim humans are smarter than all other species, and that the human brain is special, and human beings are made in the image of god.
Okay so, let's debate this relatively harmless assessment of humans and the human mind or brain.
Did you know that an earthworm's brain is essentially similar in basic molecular structure, "but how can that be" wonders the devout religious person? Simple, the human brain has evolved through evolution over a very long period of time.
Essentially, almost all life on earth with a brain is at least somewhat similar in nature.
Same for fruit flies, aquatic life, birds, reptiles, and other animals.
Still, you have to admit that a worm is very small and very simple and yet contains much of the components of the human brain.
How is this even possible? For those who fail to understand or give credit to evolutionary theory, this ought to be yet, another sign that evolution is all around us, and in us, as an evolved species.
If humans were really all that special and god created them to be such, wouldn't this supreme being have giving you bigger brains? After all, if all humans had better brains they could then understand evolutionary theory and thus, we'd never be having this conversation in the first place.
It is rather arrogant for humans to believe that they are better or more divine than all other species here on Earth, that is pretty silly when you think about it.
The reality is that the human brain seems to have a lot to be desired and it is amazing the difference in brain usage, intelligence, and reasoning ability within the species.
In fact, it appears that at least some brains are far more evolved than others, and that human brain evolution is going to continue to evolve, or devolve if we turn our minds off and fall for the fantasy and superstition that human religion has produced.
A great book to read on this topic is; "God is not Great - How Religion Poisons Everything" by Christopher Hitchens.
