- 1). Purchase wire or plastics racks, baskets or shelves to create zones in your box freezer, if it does not have separate compartments.
- 2). Remove everything from your box freezer.
- 3). Discard all expired items, and any items that can't be identified with clear labeling.
- 4). Place heavy items such as a frozen turkey or large roasts into the bottom of your box freezer. This prevents you from having to shift it while looking for other meat items.
- 5). Place other frozen meat packages into the freezer on a separate rack or shelf, or into a wire basket. Creating zones in your box freezer allows you to find necessary items quickly. Place the oldest meat packages on the top and meat that isn't near the expiration date on the bottom of the compartment. Separate the meat further by placing all the poultry by itself and following the same procedure with beef, pork and seafood.
- 6). Follow the same procedure with fruits and vegetables. Create another section for ice cream products or frozen treats. Always place the oldest product on the top.
- 7). Label all future purchases of meat or other frozen packages with the date, quantity and type of meat or other food. Use self-adhesive labels or a permanent marker to write on the packages or containers.
