- 1). Measure the size of your pond to calculate the water capacity, using a measuring tape. Pump and filter setups are built to handle specific amounts of water, and you'll need one that efficiently filters the amount of water in your pond.
- 2). Set your system up outside the pond first, per the directions on the packaging. Setting it up in the open allows you to work in a dry, clearly visible environment. Do not turn the system on yet.
- 3). Set the system in its desired location in your pond. There is no need to empty the pond or remove fish or plants during this step. Place the pump and filter in the water, plug it in and turn it on. Monitor the system periodically on the first day to make sure it's running as it should, and do not expect to see immediate results. It may take several days for the filtration to start showing as cleaner water.
