- 1). Park the Virago on its center stand. Start its motor and let it idle in place for 3 minutes. Stop the motor and let it cool for another 10 minutes.
- 2). Place an oil-drain pan below the drain bolt on the bottom-front corner of the motor. Unscrew the drain bolt, using a 17 mm socket and a socket wrench; drain the motor's oil. Screw the drain bolt into place, and tighten it to 32 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
- 3). Lift the front of the seat's cushion off of the Virago's frame rails and unscrew the seat's mounting bolts; use a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench. Lift the front of the seat up, then pull the seat forward until the tab under the rear of the seat is released from the Virago's frame.
- 4). Pull the left side cover -- located just below the seat -- off of the frame. This allows access to the Virago's electrical wiring harness.
- 5). Unscrew the bolts from the perimeter of the left crankcase cover, using a 5 mm Allen wrench. Pull the cover and its gasket off of the motor by hand. Unscrew the stator's mounting bolts from the inside face of the left crankcase cover; use a 5 mm Allen wrench. Pull the stator off the cover. Follow the stator's wiring lead to the Virago's wiring harness; unplug its connector.
- 6). Bolt a new stator onto the inside face of the left crankcase cover with a 5 mm Allen wrench. Tighten the bolts to 14 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench. Route the stator's wiring lead through the channel cut into the bottom of the cover.
- 7). Place a new crankcase cover-gasket on the motor, followed by the left crankcase cover. Screw the left crankcase cover's bolts into place with a 5 mm Allen wrench. Tighten the bolts to 7 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. Route the stator's wiring lead up through the Virago's frame and into the wiring harness.
- 8). Push the left-side cover into the grommets along the side of the Virago's frame. Slip the tab on the rear of the seat into the slot cut into the Virago's rear fender; lay the seat on the frame rails. Screw the seat's mounting bolts into place with a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench.
- 9). Unscrew the oil filler cap from the top of the left crankcase cover. Fill the motor with 3 qts. of 10W30 motor oil, using a funnel. Screw the oil filler cap into place.
