- 1). Turn off your Grand Am and allow the engine to completely cool down.
- 2). Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. Remove the drain plug at the very bottom of the radiator with a socket wrench and drain the coolant in to the pan. Reattach the plug once the radiator is empty.
- 3). Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts connected to the alternator, air cleaner unit and exhaust manifold. Lift them all from the engine and place in a safe area. Use a nut driver to remove the drive belt tensioner bolt. Lift the drive belt from the engine.
- 4). Loosen the bolt fixed to the upper and lower radiator hose clamps. Move the hoses off their clamps and pull them from their connectors. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts attached to the cylinder head. Lift the cylinder head out of place. Remove the head gasket from the engine block.
- 5). Place the new head gasket on to the engine block. Put the cylinder head on top of the gasket and secure in place with the bolts. Reconnect the radiator hoses to their connectors and fix in place by reattaching the clamps. Place the drive belt back on the tensioner and secure in place by tightening the tensioner bolt.
- 6). Place the alternator, air cleaner unit and exhaust manifold back in to the engine and secure in place by reattaching the mounting bolts with a wrench. Unscrew the cap off the radiator and fill the radiator with coolant.
