- 1). Assemble the air conditioning unit's mounting hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 2). Place your air conditioner inside the window frame, fitting the hardware to the window's edges.
- 3). Secure the air conditioner. Tighten the hardware screws with a screwdriver to hold the unit to the window frame. Stretch the accordion sides outward until no open space remains. Secure the sides in place with screws.
- 4). Close the window on the air conditioner, making sure it fits in the groove of the mounting hardware.
- 5). Caulk the outside edges where the air conditioner meets the window frame and sash. This minimizes the possibility of rain leaking into your home. Load a tube of caulk into your caulk gun. Cut the applicator tip at an angle, using a utility knife. Press the caulk gun trigger to apply a bead of caulk around the edges.
- 6). If there is space between the sliding window top sash and the glass of the stationary window pane, insert a foam strip to minimize air flow. This helps increase the efficiency of your air conditioner by keeping the hot air outside and the cool air inside.
