How to Make a Wooden Rope Swing

    • 1). Select a sturdy garden branch from which to hang your rope swing. The branch should be straight, parallel to the ground and relatively isolated. Use a ladder to inspect the branch for any signs of rot or disease.

    • 2). Cut a block of solid wood, such as oak or cedar, into a shape approximately 30 inches long, 12 inches wide and 2 inches thick, forming the seat of the swing. Mark the precise dimensions with a pencil before you start sawing to ensure accuracy.

    • 3). Drill four holes, one in each corner of the block. For strength and stability, the holes should be at least 3 inches away from the edge of the block. After sanding the block to remove splinters, apply a layer of varnish and leave it to dry.

    • 4). Select a part of the branch far enough from the trunk to prevent accidental collisions and throw two lengths of rope over the branch, looping twice for extra support. Wait to cut the rope down to size until you have attached the seat.

    • 5). Thread the ends of the rope through the holes in the seat and secure it with bowline knots, leaving the seat roughly 3 feet from the ground. Sit on the seat to test if can sufficiently carry weight. Remove any excess rope with a sharp knife and singe the ends with a match to seal them.
