- 1). Dig a hole in the ground large enough for the water from the waterfall and stream to fall back into. Use the dirt from the hole to pile up a slope where you want the waterfall and stream located. Pack this dirt firmly on the ground. Also dig a stream bed from the pond hole to where the waterfall will be constructed.
- 2). Lay a flexible pond liner in both the hole and across the stream bed. If necessary, use one piece of liner for each, and overlap them at the junction with the stream liner over the pond liner so the water from the stream can fall directly into the pond. Hold down the edges of the liner with rocks.
- 3). Build the waterfall at the top of the stream by increasing the slope of the dirt and supporting it with large rocks on sides and back. The flexible pond liner should still lay in a concave manner so the water can flow down it.
- 4). Place a submersible pond pump into the pond hole at the bottom of the stream. Attach a hose or tube long enough to reach from the pump to the top of the waterfall structure. Lay the hose up the slope alongside the pond liner forming the stream bed. Position the opening of the hose at the top of the waterfall so it points down toward the pond.
- 5). Place large rocks along the sides of the stream bed and around the waterfall structure to make it look as natural as possible. Use a larger flat rock to hold the top of the hose in place. If necessary, hold the rocks together with silicone sealant or expanding pond foam.
- 6). Cover the pond with sturdy wire mesh if you do not want the pond to stay open. Cover this with flat rocks and smaller rocks or pebbles scattered about to create a more natural look. For an open pond, simply decorate the edges with rocks. You can also plant trailing plants or ground covers to soften the edges.
- 7). Add additional rocks into smaller sizes to both the outside of the waterfall and stream structure and to the stream bed. Putting rocks in the stream bed will create a more natural look. Start with larger rocks and work down to pebbles. Finish the waterfall and stream design by planting plants that enjoy moisture.
