- 1). Decide what kind of connection you want. Dial-up connections are the slowest, but you can obtain one for around $15 a month. DSL and cable connections are far faster and can range from $30 to close to $100. A wireless connection often comes with the DSL and cable connections at no extra charge.
- 2). Plug the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port in the side of your wall, or, if using a dial-up connection, plug the phone cable into the phone jack.
- 3). Connect the phone cable to the "Internet" port on the dial-up modem (usually pre-installed on all computers). Insert the DSL cable into the "Internet" port on the DSL modem. If you are using a cable modem, connect the coaxial cable running from the wall (installed by the cable company) to the "Internet" port on the cable modem.
- 4). Attach a second Ethernet cable into one of the "Out" ports on either the DSL or cable modem. If you are using just the wired connection, plug the other end of the cable into the Ethernet port on the computer. If you are using a wireless router, also plug the Ethernet cable into the "Internet" port on the wireless router.
- 5). Power on all the devices, and you have finished your Internet connection hookup.
