- 1). Test the total alkalinity of the hot tub with a test strip. The reading must be in the range of 60 to 180 parts per million. If it is higher than 180, you must add alkalinity reducer.
- 2). Add the appropriate amount of alkalinity reducer mixed with water according to the size of the hot tub being treated. Retest the water to make sure that the total alkalinity is in range and continue to Step 3.
- 3). After the proper alkalinity level is reached, test the pH level. The ideal range is 7.2 to 7.8. If the pH is high, add a pH reducer; if it is too low, use a pH increaser. Follow the directions on the container to achieve the correct reading.
- 4). Retest the pH and total alkalinity.
