- 1). Remove grass and soil next to the driveway. Dig a trench 6 inches deep and 2 inches wider than the pavers.
- 2). Insert 2-by-6 boards on edge along the outside perimeter of the trench, a quarter-inch above ground level. Measure to ensure that the pavers will fit between the board edging and driveway. Pound stakes into the ground along the outer edges of the boards to hold them in place.
- 3). Smooth the soil with a rake. Sprinkle lightly with water and tamp firmly with the plate compactor.
- 4). Pour 4 inches of crushed gravel into the trench. Rake evenly over the soil, then sprinkle with water and tamp firmly.
- 5). Add 2 inches of sand to the trench and tamp firmly. The tamped gravel and sand should compress so there is still a 2-inch space between the sand and top edge of the driveway. Add or remove sand if necessary so the pavers will lie flush with the driveway.
- 6). Place the pavers onto the base, adding or subtracting sand as needed to ensure a solid contact with the sand. Tap into place with a rubber mallet. Use a scrap piece of wood to check that the pavers are perfectly even with the driveway surface.
- 7). Pour sand over the pavers and sweep into all cracks and crevices. Sprinkle with water and repeat.
