- The bearing bars of steel grating -- the bars that bear the weight or load -- are typically made from rolled, sheet or slit steel or steel extruded so its cross-section resembles a letter I (I-bar). The surface of the steel may be serrated to provide a safe surface to walk on.
- Steel gratings are typically constructed from mild carbon steel or stainless steel. Mild carbon steel provides added strength for steel gratings in commercial and industrial applications, while stainless steel -- typically type 304 or 306 -- provides corrosion resistance.
- Steel grating is typical finished by painting or galvanizing (coating with zinc). Some steel grating is shipped untreated so it can be finished by the recipient, or may be finished by a process known as hot dip galvanizing by the manufacturer.
