How to Help Your Sick Parrot

Pet parrots can get sick just like any other bird.
They are very fragile.
A sick parrot will try their best to hide their illnesses, unlike many other pets.
Most of the time, in the wild, sick birds fall prey to predators.
Other times, in order to keep the group safe, they are kicked out of the flock by their fellow birds.
It is very crucial to keep a vigilant watch on your pet parrot.
A small change in the behavior or demeanor of your bird may already be a very drastic and fatal change to him by the time you notice it.
If you notice any such changes then it is very important to immediately bring it to the attention of your veterinarian.
If you are not able to locate a vet immediately you need to be able to take care of your parrot appropriately.
During that time, there are a couple of things that you should keep in mind.
1.
Keep your bird warm: The basic and the most important advice is to keep the bird warm.
When the bird is sick, he loses his ability to keep himself warm.
Be very particular that no air vents are facing towards your bird.
If you cannot manage to get the room temperature high then it is better to buy a sun lamp heater from one of your local pet stores.
The red glow of the lamp does not distract or keep your bird awake, but helps to keep them calm and warm.
Also make sure that the lamp is far enough away that your parrot does not come in contact with it accidentally.
2.
Perching problem: If your sick parrot is having troubling perching then it is best advised to place it in a hospital cage.
Hospital cages are smaller than regular cages but still have food bowls, a perch and water.
An aquarium made of glass works wonder as it gives them a solid platform to sit on and helps in better heat retention.
Also keep in mind to heat on only one side, so that if one side gets too hot then your parrot can move to the other side.
3.
Hydrate: When they are sick, birds easily loose strength.
Also they become dehydrated and it is important to keep the water level in their body up to as high a level as possible.
You can Give them a Pedialyte solution, it helps in many cases.
See whether the bird will take it or not, then use an eye dropper to feed him the solution.
Pay attention that you do not force its mouth open or force too much in at one time.
4.
Bleeding: If your pet is bleeding, then first you should locate the source.
In most of the cases, it tends to come out from the nails, feathers or beak.
If the nail is just chipped off, then apply styptic powder.
In a case, when it breaks a blood feather, it is near impossible to make it stop.
Pull the feather from the base of the bone.
Before doing this wrap a towel around it.
Then get him checked by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Although this last treatment falls more under the category of first aid, it is nonetheless necessary to know.
All of the above will help when you find yourself dealing with a sick parrot.
