- 1). Wash the surface of the fountain with a pH-neutral cleaning agent -- this is available at pool and spa supply stores. Scrub the fountain well, paying particular attention to any porous surfaces. Rinse the fountain thoroughly, and allow it to dry.
- 2). Stir the spar varnish thoroughly until it is well-mixed. Dip a natural-bristled paintbrush in the varnish, and wipe the excess varnish on the lip of the can.
- 3). Paint a thin, even layer of spar varnish on the surface of the fountain. Start at the top of the fountain, then work your way down to the bottom. Keep an eye out for runs in the finish, and smooth them out with the brush before allowing the varnish to dry.
- 4). Scuff the spar varnish with a piece of fine-grade sandpaper. This smooths out imperfections in the finish and gives the next coat a better bonding surface. Wipe away dust created by this process with a damp cloth, then allow the fountain to dry.
- 5). Apply a second coat of spar varnish using the same process you used earlier. Allow the spar varnish to dry completely before filling the fountain with water. Spar varnish drying times vary by product -- see the manufacturer's label for details.
