- The Cisco Sidecar is a device that you can attach to your IP phone. Once attached, you can assign phone numbers to any of the speed dial buttons located on the left and right sides of the device. You can also use the same buttons to assign extensions to workers in your office if you wish. The Cisco Sidecar makes it easier for you to route calls one after another because you can do so with the touch of a single button. You can also park active calls and switch between them.
- The Cisco Sidecar consists of two vertical lines of 16 buttons on each side. The device stands vertically beside your IP phone, so it is always within reach. The buttons are spaced as far apart as possible. This is important, because it ensures that you have plenty of space to write the name of the person that each button routes to in the space between the buttons. If you need more capacity, you can connect a second Cisco Sidecar to the IP phone.
- Each button has five possible states, and these states are indicated by a different color. The first state is green, and this indicates that the line is available for use. The second state is a solid red light, and this means that the line is in use. The third state is a flashing red light, which means that the line is either on hold, or ringing. If you see an orange light, it means that the light is disconnected, and not functioning. Finally, a gray light means that the line has not been properly configured.
- You configure the Cisco Sidecar through a piece of software called the "Cisco Configuration Assistant." The Configuration Assistant contains a wizard for the Cisco Sidecar, as well other Cisco products. When you run the wizard, you will be prompted to ensure that the IP phone that you are connecting the Sidecar to is up to date and is connected properly to your network. The Cisco Configuration Assistant is free software that you can download from "cisco.com."
