- 1). Keep your house clean. Bugs feast on leftover food and crumbs. Keep your food in sealed containers and in the refrigerator. Rinse recyclable bottles out after use. Clean out any junk or clutter from your storage areas.
- 2). Capture a bug to show the problem to your landlord. Bedbugs are a perfect example of problem pests in your apartment. They can enter the apartment by hanging on to clothing. Once in the dwelling they can multiply. Capture a bedbug with double-sided tape so you can show your landlord. An exterminator can fumigate your apartment and eliminate the problem.
- 3). Seal any crevices or cracks that lead to the outside. Ask the apartment manager or landlord to seal these openings from the outside. Besides bugs, mice and rats will also be kept out.
- 4). Utilize pest control. If you feel you can handle minor bug problems, use safe pest control products available on the market. Identify which pests are in your apartment and buy a pest control product that is used for that particular bug. Keep in mind that many of these products include chemicals that may be harmful to pets and children. Consider using a gel or bait station that, unlike a spray, doesn't spread to the other areas of your apartment.
- 5). See if your landlord will hire or allow you to hire a pest management professional. Visit the National Pest Management Association to find qualified pest control professionals. When you hire a professional, ask for a license and what pest control organizations they are associated with. Plan to stay with friends or family for a night or two until the apartment is free of the pest sprays.
