Hi, I'm Farm to Table Chef, Teca Thompson, at Tecathompson.com, and today we're talking about how to mulch around tomato plants. So there's very different kinds of mulch and you can really use whatever is going to work for you or what's easily available to you. So I like to collect old lawn trimmings or leaf trimmings and then I just cut them up and make them small and mulchable size and I'm going to take some recycled newspaper, non-glossy and I'm just going to lay it around my plant making sure not to cover the leaves. So mulching is great because it's good for insulating the plant whether we are dealing with heat or cold. It helps cool the plant when it is overheated and it helps keep in moisture and warm the plant on cooler days or nights, a little more newspaper here. So you want to do this when the plant is about yay high, about four inches, whether you are transplanting little baby plants or doing the seed directly into the ground. Now I'll just take my recycled mulch and I'm just going to pour a thick layer all around my plant. Now I'm only exampling on one plant today but this would all basically work in your garden as many plants as you are going to do. And then I'm going to just take my tomato cage and I'm going to cage it right over the mulch, right through the paper and everything and there you go, that's how to mulch a tomato plant.
