- 1). Open your bag of coal and check for wetness. If the coal is mildly damp, leaving the bag open or emptying it into an open-topped bin should allow it to dry quickly.
- 2). Lay out some newspaper or a tarp on the ground outside in full sun or in a warm, dry location, such as the attic of a garage or loft.
- 3). Scoop your coal out and spread it on the paper or tarp.
- 4). Leave it to dry in the sun or in your warm, dry location for between several hours and a full day or until it feels dry to the touch.
- 5). Test the coal by starting a fire and trying to burn it. If it burns well, it's dry. If it spits and has trouble burning, leave it in your drying spot another few hours.
