- 1). Open the XMP text editor program and begin a new text document. Insert the following text header declaration as per DocBook protocol: <!DOCTYPE article PUBLIC "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook V4.1//EN">
- 2). Include the title of the document by inserting "<article>" (without the quotes) at the beginning of the next line. Indent the third line by pressing "Tab" and add "<articleinfo>". Press "Enter," "Tab" and include the title of your novel by typing "<title>" followed by your title name and ending with "</title>".
- 3). Add your legal or pen name to the document by pressing "Enter" and "Tab" once more before adding "<author>". On the next line press tab twice to further indent the name and insert the following text: "<firstname>" your first name and then "</firstname>". Directly underneath this add "<surname>" your last name "</surname>". Press enter and tab once again and insert "</author>". Add "</articleinfo>" directly beneath this.
- 4). Include the title of the chapter by pressing "Enter" once more and adding the text "<sect1 label="1.0">". Press "Enter" and "Tab" and include this text on the following line: "<title>" the title of your chapter "</title>".
- 5). Press "Enter" once again and write "<para>" on the next line. Press "Enter" once again and begin writing the first paragraph of your novel draft.
- 6). Include "</para>" on a separate line at the end of each paragraph and begin each paragraph with "<para>" by itself on a single line. Once you complete the chapter be certain to conclude by pressing "Enter" and including "</sect1>" on a line of its own, followed by "</article>".
- 7). Repeat steps four through six for each chapter, increasing the number behind "sect" as you do so. For instance: <sect2 label="1.0"> and </sect2>.
