- 1). Protect your eyes and skin by wearing safety goggles and rubber gloves. You will be working with chemicals to complete this project.
- 2). Use a paint brush to apply a layer of paint stripper to the tiles. Allow it to soak in for a few minutes, then gently scrap away the existing paint using your putty knife.
- 3). Repeat Step 2 until all layers of paint have been removed.
- 4). Remove difficult spots of paint using a piece of fine steel wool soaked in paint stripper. Gently rub the spots with the steel wool to remove them.
- 5). Sand away any rusted or corroded areas using a fine grit sandpaper. Try to sand gently and in one direction only so you don't damage the tiles.
- 6). Apply a coat of primer that is specially formulated for use on metal. Rustoleum is a good option and can be applied with a regular paint brush. This primer coat will help keep your tiles from rusting and will provide a good base for your paint to adhere to.
- 7). Decide how you'd like to paint your ceiling. Tin ceilings can be painted all one color, or the raised patterns can be painted a separate color from the background.
- 8). Paint your tiles. If you are using two separate colors, paint the background first, then go back and paint the embossed sections using a smaller brush.
