- 1). Locate a fishing spot. Sand sole live in shallow sandy areas between the Bering Sea and southern California. They can be found on the ocean floor from near shore up to a depth of 183 meters.
- 2). Attach a weight to the end of the fishing line. The weight will keep the line low near the bottom where the fish dwell.
- 3). Attach a lure or hook with bait. Sand sole mainly eat fish, shrimp, worms and clams. Hooks should be small.
- 4). Drop the line into the water and allow it to sink. Keep one hand on the line to feel the tension. The tension will decrease when the weight hits bottom. Reel in about one meter of line.
- 5). Be patient and occasionally dip the rod up and down. If no bites occur within an hour or longer, move the boat to a new location and try again.
- 6). When a fish bites the hook, a noticeable bend in the rod will occur. Reel in slowly and feel the weight of the fish on the line.. Reel in slowly when the weight is heavy and increase gradually if the weight decreases. The line is heaviest with the fish swimming directly away. A steady and slow pace keeps lighter line tension and helps prevent a line break.
