- 1). Plant the eastern white cedar in an area with full sun and moist soil. If the soil is not rich enough, add 10 to 12 inches of compost to it and work it into the soil to a depth of 2 feet. Dig a hole for the cedar tree 2 feet deep and 3 feet wide. Place the root ball into the hole and fill the hole with soil.
- 2). Water the eastern white cedar well at least once a week. Water the tree for 20 minutes each time to allow the soil to get thoroughly moist all the way down to the plant's roots.
- 3). Apply about 1/2 lb. of 10-10-10 fertilizer once a year to the eastern white cedar's roots. Apply the fertilizer in the springtime and water the tree for 20 minutes to allow the fertilizer to soak into the soil.
- 4). Prune the eastern white cedar into a hedge, if wanted, in the spring when the tree is dormant. Remove any dead, damaged or diseased foliage as well. No other pruning is needed.
