- 1). Incorporate sand or loam into the soil around your Douglas fir trees in order to increase aeration and drainage. Douglas firs require very good soil drainage, so incorporate these soil amendments into the first four inches of the soil.
- 2). Water the Douglas fir between 1 and 4 times per month. The amount of water that you give the tree depends on how much the soil retains and also the amount of rainfall in your area. In dryer areas, you may need to water up to 4 times a month. Check the soil with your fingers. You can also dig a small hole into the ground to check how moist the soil is. If you feel the soil is still moist, wait another week to water the tree.
- 3). Fertilize a young Douglas fir with a low-nitrogen tree fertilizer once a month during the summer. For mature trees, you can use a well-balanced fertilizer.
- 4). Clear away any weeds within three feet of the Douglas firs' trunks.
- 5). Install a protective tubing barrier around the trees to protect the leaves and cones from being eaten by deer and other wildlife.
