- 1). Vacuum the entire home thoroughly to kill fleas embedded in carpets and upholstery. Use the vacuum's attachment on upholstered surfaces. Empty the vacuum's bag into an outdoor trashcan to prevent fleas from re-infesting the home.
- 2). Launder the pet's bedding and clothing according to the manufacturers' instructions. Washing infested items drowns fleas. Machine-dry the items using the hot temperature setting.
- 3). Sprinkle diatomaceous earth liberally over the pet's clean bedding to kill any remaining fleas. Disperse diatomaceous earth onto carpeting and rugs as well.
- 4). Wash the infested animal outdoors with an organic pet shampoo. While wearing gloves, thoroughly massage the shampoo into the pet's fur and skin. Rinse the animal thoroughly to drown the fleas.
- 5). Create a homemade rinsing solution to kill any remaining fleas and prevent re-infestation. Slice a whole lemon, including the peel, with a knife. Place the lemon slices into a pot containing 1/2 qt. of hot water and let them soak overnight.
- 6). Strain the contents of the pot to collect the lemon water. Sponge the lemon water onto the pet's fur and skin. Let the lemon water air-dry on the pet.
