- Use glow sticks to light up carved pumpkins without the risk of fire.halloween image by Nicolas D from Fotolia.com
Glow sticks add a bit of extra oomph to your Halloween decor. Glow sticks are inexpensive and can be purchased from big box stores, craft stores and dollar stores. Any craft you make with glow sticks will glow for eight to 12 hours, depending on the type and size of the stick you are using, so don't actually activate the stick until right before you need it. You can do all of the craft preparation work in advance, and then simply snap the sticks to activate them. - Make a glowing ghost with a white or light-colored balloon and a glow stick. You can hang the balloon with a piece of fishing line and it will appear to be floating in space once the lights are out. To make a glowing ghost, snap a glow stick and insert it into the opening of a balloon. Blow up the balloon and decorate it with permanent black marker if desired. Hang it wherever you need a fun Halloween effect. You can also make jack-o-lantern-themed balloons with this technique; simply use an orange balloon and add face details with marker. Your glowing ghost or pumpkin will last between eight to 10 hours.
- Immerse some glow sticks in your punchbowl to make an eerie Halloween potion for a party. Snap six glow sticks and place them in a zipper seal bag. Seal the bag, then immerse it in your favorite punch recipe to provide a magical glow. Purchase food- and beverage-safe glow cubes to serve in your guests' cups if desired.
- Make a glowing spider out of eight mini-glow sticks and a foam ball. The ball becomes the body of the spider and the glow sticks the legs. To make, snap the glow sticks to activate them and insert them into the foam ball by pressing them 1 inch into the ball's surface. Use four sticks on each side and arrange them like legs. Make a single spider or a bunch of little ones to display in the yard on Halloween night.
